Cox praises 'natural leader' O'Callaghan

BACK ROW Matt Cox has hailed Warriors skipper Donncha O’Callaghan as a ‘natural leader’ and admitted the Irishman makes the players want to give an ‘extra five per cent’ on the pitch.

The Redditch-born player, who lives with O’Callaghan, insisted the ‘passion’ and ‘care’ the British and Irish Lions legend has for the club is second to none.

Giant lock O’Callaghan has skippered Warriors in the Premiership since director of rugby Gary Gold joined the club in February, and has helped the team pick up two wins in four matches, including a thumping 41-24 victory against basement side Bristol at Sixways last Sunday.

“Donncha constantly talks about rugby. He’s always ready to play and is passionate about the club. He’s a natural leader and when he speaks everyone listens,” said Cox.

“He cares an awful lot, not just about the rugby, but about the players too. After what he’s done over his career, he’s a very humble bloke for it and makes sure he spends time with everyone at the club.

“He’s a successful player and ticks a lot of boxes. You want to play for him. He makes you want to give an extra five per cent on the field.

“When you have a guy on your team who cares so much and wants success across the board, he’s the player you want leading.”

Former England Sevens international Cox recently signed a two-year contract with the Sixways outfit.

“It’s great to play for your hometown club and help them on their journey. I’m very pleased to have signed an extension and I hope we can continue what we’ve started at Sixways,” he added.
