City seal tight FA Cup win

Worcester Editorial 15th Sep, 2020   0

WORCESTER City will tackle Stafford Rangers in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup after marking their first Saturday in their new home with a 2-1 win over Walsall Wood.

A brace for Sean Brain gave City a first win at Claines Lane in the preliminary round of the FA Cup on Saturday and put the Blue and Whites in the next round.

His first came in the 17th minute, firing low past keeper James Wren after a scramble from Jamie Smith’s cross into the middle. The lead was doubled soon afterwards when Brain got in behind the defence and slotted past the keeper.

Wood responded by making two substitutions which steadied them down and they responded early in the second half when Michael Nelson crossed to the back post for Kyle Rowley to power a header into the roof of the net.

City were not to be denied though and held out to secure a first win of the new season and a tie with the Staffordshire side at Claines Lane on Wednesday, September 23 at 7.45pm.

Before their cup clash, Ash Vincent’s men will be looking to record their first win of the Midland Football League season with games against Romulus on Wednesday, September 16, followed by a trip to Sporting Khalsa on Saturday, September 19.
