City facing stern tests

Worcester Editorial 18th Oct, 2018   0

LEAGUE crowns are not won in October but Worcester City face a test of their title credentials over the next two weekends when they play two of the top-four sides.

There’s a mouthwatering clash on Saturday afternoon as third placed City welcome Midlands Premier leaders Ilkeston Town to the Victoria Ground.

Ilkeston, who are the league’s highest scorers (29 goals), have registered 28 points from a possible 36 and are three points above the Blue And Whites but crucially have a game in hand.

After the Ilkeston clash, City are at home again the following Saturday (October 27) when they play host to fourth placed Sporting Khalsa.

Khalsa have not lost a league game since the second game of the season are proving to be a tough nut to crack having conceded just eight goals in ten games so far.

The Willenhall side sit two points behind City but have three games in hand.

Sandwiched between the two top-of-the-table clashes is a Worcestershire Senior Urn tie away at Pershore Town, now managed by former Malvern Town boss Les Jones, on Tuesday (October 23 – 7.45pm KO).

City head into their league exploits on the back of Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Long Eaton United in the first round of the FA Vase.

A Tyler Weir brace inside 37 minutes gave City the impetus before Zak Goodson pulled one back for the visitors just moments later.

However, Long Eaton’s afternoon was made all the more difficult just before the break when Daniel Faulkner was sent off after picking up a second yellow card for a high challenge on Jamie Smith.

The second half proved to be a drab affair as City held firm to secure a place in the second round where they will play host to United Counties Premier outfit Desborough Town.

The tie will be played on Sunday, November 4 (3pm KO) due to Victoria Ground landlords Bromsgrove Sporting being at home on Saturday, November 3.

Winners of the tie will receive £900 while the losers pocket £300.

Due to City’s progression in the FA Vase, their away league fixture at Long Eaton on November 3 has been rescheduled for Tuesday, November 20 (7.45pm KO).
