Bower relishing spots in first-team line-up

LOOSEHEAD prop Ryan Bower insists he is ready to step up to Warriors’ first team after impressing in his unexpected Aviva Premiership debut against Saracens.

The 25-year-old was told he would be starting for the club in the 24-18 win at the last minute, after fellow looseheads Val Rapava Ruskin and Ryan Grant failed late fitness tests.

Bower also featured for the first 55 minutes in Saturday’s loss against Exeter Chiefs.

“I had a call the night before the Saracens game advising me to be ready just in case, then the next morning I was told I would be starting,” said the loosehead.

“Obviously I was quite nervous because it was my first Premiership start and there was no specialist loosehead cover on the bench.

“But I was just happy to play. I always make sure I know the plays in case anything happens and I was fortunate enough to get my chance.

“Mefin Davies gave me a few words about the scrum and the coaches told me to take my opportunity. Saracens have a very good pack, so it was an enjoyable contest in the scrum.

“My family came to watch and were really happy for me. I had a few text messages come through and it was nice to hear some of the comments from fans after the game. It’s great to see them happy.

“Hopefully I’ve shown the coaches I’m always ready if another chance comes along.”
