Betty: We have a good platform to build on

EXPERIENCED flanker Sam Betty insists the club have had a positive campaign despite finishing tenth and believes the Sixways outfit have created a platform to build on for next season.

The dynamic back row, who joined Warriors from Cornish Pirates in 2011, said he was proud the side would be playing Aviva Premiership rugby next season after coming up from the Championship last year and believes the club could now look forward to establishing themselves as a competitive top tier side.

The Sixways centurion, who played just 17 games this campaign after spending two months on the sidelines following a concussion in the match against Wasps in January, admits his performances have been a ‘mixed bag’, but is happy he could contribute.

“Looking back over the campaign I think the main positive is we’re still a Premiership club. We always knew we were going top be in that small group at the bottom of the table after coming up from the Championship last year,” said the Bristol-born star.

“But, not only have we avoided relegation, we’ve had some positive spells including winning four consecutive matches, a feat we’ve never done before.

“We were never at the bottom of the table throughout the season and even when we were losing games we were playing well, so we never really worried about getting stuck in a relegation scrap.

“I think we would’ve been happy with finishing tenth before the season started, but with letting a few close games slip away we know we could’ve finished slightly higher.

“I think we’ve created a good platform to build on for next year. Our target is always about improving.

“For me I think Bryce Heem has stood out from the rest this year, he’s a big quick winger and has been very powerful for us. He’s probably been our best player.

“Personally, I haven’t played a lot of games this season so it’s been a bit of a mixed bag performance wise compared to previous campaigns, but as long as I can contribute in some way that’s all what matters.

“It’s been a long season for us all so it’s quite nice to have a break now and get away from rugby for a bit,” he added.
