Celebrate Worcester's heritage as popular events return

Worcester Editorial 6th Feb, 2024   0

HERITAGE venues across the Faithful City will be hosting a nine-day celebration of the area as the ‘Love Worcester’ festival returns.

There will be a host of family-friendly events taking place across the city between February 9 and February 18.

Activities will be held at churches, museums, libraries and other public venues.

The fun will get under way on Saturday, February 10, when St Swithun’s Church will be hosting the ‘Rave in the Nave’.

This event will feature two hours of family-friendly music as well as arts and crafts and face painting.

On the same day, the Hive Children’s Library will be hosting drop-in sessions focused on the ‘Magical Marps’ theme.

This year’s Light Night Worcester will be held on February 14 and 15, which will see the city centre brightened by giant light-based artworks, colourful interactive installations and inspiring artistic commissions.

The event is free and will be running from 6pm to 9pm on both nights.

Then on February 17 and 18, the Living History weekend will see 200 re-enactors covering 2000 years of history in six venues around the city centre.

During this event, Worcester will be cast back to the Roman, Viking, Medieval, English Civil Wars and Napoleonic periods.

Many of these events will run across both days, including Ragged Victorians at Tudor House, Tudor re-enactors at Greyfriars and First and Second World War military vehicles at Cathedral Square.

There will also be encampments at The Commandery with military drills, music and dancing in the Great Hall.

Saturday-only events include displays commemorating both World Wars in the Guildhall and local history and heritage groups at St Helen’s Church.

And on February 18, the Museum of Royal Worcester is celebrating Chinese New Year with the Worcestershire Chinese Association, including a Dragon Dance at 12:30pm.

Vice-chair of Worcester City Council’s Place and Economic Development, Coun Hannah Cooper, said: “There’s always plenty to do and see in our wonderful city, and the Love Worcester events are the perfect chance to experience all that Worcester has to offer.”
