STUDENTS across Worcester joined teenagers nationwide to discover their A-Level grades as the nervous wait for their results came to an end.

Teenagers at Christopher Whitehead Language College were among those celebrating on Thursday when the results were revealed.

A-Level students have been awarded the highest proportion of As and A*s since 2012, amid changes toughening the exams in England which saw proportion gaining A* to C dropped to 78.4 per cent from 79 per cent last year.

And students at the Bromwich Road school showcased their talents to help the school to an overall pass rate of 96 per cent with 73 per cent of grades at A* to C and 47 per cent at A* to B.

Worcester Sixth Form College saw its overall pass rate of 98.5 per cent above the national average, which this year was 97.6 per cent, for the 16th year in a row.

A total of 420 students or 99.5 per cent of those eligible, gained at least one A Level, 19.4 per cent achieved at least three B’s or better, 10 students achieved three A’s or better and one student walked off with four grades at A or B.

College staff also welcomed the news 31 of the 44 subjects taken achieved a 100 per cent pass rate.

Principal Micheal Kitcatt, said: “Both the pass rate and the percentage of students getting the higher A*-C grades are up on last year’s, whereas nationally both those figures are down.

“I am delighted the hard work of our students and staff and the particular expertise of our staff in A Levels and 16-19 year old education are reflected in today’s results.”

King’s School Worcester staff and students were celebrating after the school notched up an impressive 93 per cent of grades at A* to C, with 77 per cent of results at A*to B – the school’s strongest results for a number of years.

Head of school Alice Evans led the way with three A*s and one A which helped secure her place at University College, Oxford to study Biomedical Sciences and Ollie Colebourne achieved four A*s in Chemistry, Maths, Further Maths and Physics.

Joe Ashton, Bill Bishop, Andrew Salkeld, Lucy Goodman and Jamie Havercroft all also achieved A*s in three or more A Levels.

Headmaster Matthew Armstrong praised the students for their achievements and said: “It’s fantastic to see year-on-year improvements, particularly given the challenges presented with the introduction of the new syllabuses this year.

“Sixth Form is a young person’s passport to the next stage of his or her life and the students have delivered results which do themselves and also the school great credit.

“Their hard work has really paid off and we are thrilled that so many of them will be able to continue to the next stage of their career path, whether this is at university, in a professional apprenticeship or starting out in the workplace,” he added.

Celebrations were also held at RGS Worcester with a number of students securing the next phase of the educational dreams from reading engineering to the arts, history at Florida State University, USA and even a high-level apprenticeship at Aston Martin.

Headmaster John Pitt, said: “They have been an excellent year group who have done so much at RGS academically and in so many other areas.

“We are so pleased that we can support our students to pursue their interests in such a range of different subject areas.

“This is so important and our award-winning careers provision, together with these excellent A level results has made this possible and given all of our students a great head start.”
