Work set to start in St John’s

Rob George 11th May, 2020   0

WORK is set to start later this month on a further scheme within the County Council’s Relieving Congestion programme.

The work in St. John’s follows other successful improvement work in the city.

Other completed projects include the Croft Road crossing, the Sidbury /City Walls Road area and the A44 London Road/ Deansway/Bridge St corridor.

The main feature of the works in St John’s will be a formal controlled crossing at the junction of The Bullring and the traffic signals at New Rd/Tybridge Street.

The scheme will also see:

Improved crossing facilities on Henwick Road and Bush Walk.

Better carriageway widths for vehicles travelling through St John’s.

The removal of pinch-points that hinder traffic flow.

Upgrades to traffic signal technology, drainage and street lighting.

Enhanced conservation style kerb and blockwork improvements throughout the area.

The relieving congestion programme schemes in Worcester have been co-funded by the Government’s National Productivity Investment Fund with a grant of £3.4million, in addition to local funding.

Coun Alan Amos, cabinet member for Highways said: ”I’m delighted we’re now at a stage where we can begin the relieving congestion works in St John’s, the final part of our Worcester NPIF programme.

“The work at both Sidbury and Croft Road in the city has highlighted our commitment to reducing congestion both in Worcester and across the county.

“In addition, once these works are completed, we will be carrying out significant improvements to and upgrading of the pavements between the Church and the Sainsbury’s/Bransford Road junction which will make St. John’s look and feel a much nicer place.”

“Before the next phase of the main scheme can commence, we require certain utility companies to carry out works to deepen and relocate services affected in the area between the library, church and New Road island.

“During this time, a temporary traffic management system will be introduced through the area, starting with three-way temporary traffic signals as we seek to take full advantage of the current lower traffic and pedestrian flows in the area.

“There is a great detail of work to be carried out which means that this system will continue in place up to and throughout the summer holiday period. The council are hoping to complete phase one of the main scheme whilst traffic levels are normally at their lowest.

The Council will be contacting local businesses and residents directly this week about the utility works which will include all necessary COVID-19 precautions.

More detail on the phasing of the main works will be available on the County Council website in due course at www.worcestershire.gov.uk/relievingcongestion
