A WORCESTER man has been jailed for 24 years after being found guilty of murdering his father.
Police were called to Crookbarrow Road in Norton at about 11pm on November 16 last year following a report of a man attacking another man in the street.
On arrival, officers found Robert Sampson with a serious head injury and a stab wound to the body. A knife was recovered from the scene.
The 63-year-old was taken to hospital but subsequently died from his injuries.
Shortly afterwards, Daryl Sampson, 29, of Broomhall was arrested and charged with causing Robert’s death.
Sampson denied the charge but following a week-long trial at Birmingham Crown Court, he was found guilty by unanimous verdict on Thursdsay and sentenced to life behind bars, with a minimum term of 24 years to be served.
Det Sgt Natalie Martin of West Mercia Police said: “This was a senseless, violent act, which reinforces the danger of people arming themselves with knives.
“The attack happened in the open, on a public street in a quiet area in Norton. Robert’s life was sadly cut short by Daryl, who has taken no responsibility for his actions nor has he shown any remorse throughout the entire investigation and trial.
“He went out that evening carrying a knife, which he then used to ultimately, kill his father.
“Although crimes of this nature are thankfully rare within our policing areas, I hope this lengthy sentence acts as a deterrent to others.
“I also hope it goes some way to reassuring the public that West Mercia Police will always prioritise bringing offenders to justice where possible and protecting our communities from harm.
“I would like to thank the public spirited witnesses who supported the victim on the night and had the courage to come forward. I would also like praise the individuals from the first responders to the many officers and staff who painstakingly secured evidence.
“Their hard work and determination ensured a dangerous offender, who thought it was acceptable to carry a knife, was taken off the streets and put behind bars.
“Our thoughts today remain with Robert’s family. I hope this verdict brings them some comfort as they continue to come to terms with their loss,” she added.
