Worcester event at Guildhall to mark Black History Month

Worcester Editorial 5th Oct, 2023   0

WORCESTER is to mark Black History Month with a special celebration event at The Guildhall on Saturday October 21.

The event is produced by Worcester City Council in conjunction with Worcester Anti Racism Initiative, Worcester Afro Caribbean Association and Worcestershire Association of Igbo’s.

The event, “Our Cultural Heritage,” will see the building filled with history, art, music and food. Everyone is welcome to attend. The event will run between 11am and 3pm and people can drop in at any time.

There will be displays of recent social history, showing the Black communities who are represented in Worcester, as well as material from the more distant past, from the Worcestershire Archives.  The event will be used to start a ‘roll of honour’, collecting the stories and celebrating the contribution that individual Black people have made to Worcester.

Visitors will have the chance to try art workshops and enjoy music and dance performances, as well as trying food from different Black communities.

Mayor of Worcester, Cllr Louis Stephen will be attending the event and said: “We are delighted that the Guildhall is hosting a community celebration of Black cultural heritage and we’d love people to come forward to tell their stories and share their photos.

“We’re sure this is going to be an exciting event which we hope to build on for future years, so we’d also like to hear from people who would be interested in getting involved in organising future events.”

Black History Month will also be marked by two other events in Worcester – an afternoon of talks and learning events at The Hive on October 14 and the Paint the Streets exhibition at the Museum and Art Gallery which runs until Saturday 6 January 2024.
