Women and girls urged to get active in the lockdown

Worcester Editorial 2nd May, 2020   0

GIRLS and women are being offered free online exercise sessions and activities thanks to a fitness campaign going virtual.

Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire has taken its This Girl Can campaign online to help women stay or get fit during the lockdown.

The organisation had teamed up with 13 schools and activity providers to give girls the chance to take part in non-traditional sports including rock-climbing, golf, clubbercise, roller disco, rugby and yoga.

But as the coronavirus crisis unfolded, the organisers felt many women, girls, mums-to-be and senior citizens had new concerns around getting active for not only their physical health but mental wellbeing.

And nationally 67 per cent of people have said getting active has aided their mental health during the pandemic.

That has been reflected by the number of people taking part in online workouts and active learning, such as daily PE sessions with Joe Wicks.

Now trusted physical activity coaches and instructors have created a two-week female-orientated timetable of free activity.

Spokesman Huw Griffiths said there were plenty of ways to get active around the home.

“We know fear of judgement is the single greatest barrier to physical activity among girls and women – whether that’s because they feel they’re not good enough or don’t have the right kit to wear. It could be that they don’t wish to get sweaty in front of others or be laughed at.

“Research also tells us that teenage girls cherish time spent with their mum. Being active with mum or in the family unit offers girls a safe space to get active and spend quality time together.

“We want to break down the barriers so this seemed the perfect opportunity for women and girls to get active in the comfort of their own home, making the most of a judgement-free environment.”

The activity sessions began on Monday and run until next Friday.
