A MAJOR exhibition showcasing how the likes of Turner, Constable and Rembrandt captured the sky in their paintings has entered its final month in Worcester.
Featuring the brooding, the beautiful and the serene, Skyscape at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum explores how some of Europe’s most famous artists have captured the sky in their paintings.
Running until March 26, Skyscape includes masterpieces by JMW Turner, Constable, Rembrandt, Dürer, John Ruskin and Paul Nash, alongside more than 30 major artworks from the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford.
Skyscape celebrates 500 years of artists’ fascination with the sky. The exhibition tells the story of the important role they sky has played in art, how depictions have changed through time, and the emotions the sky can evoke.
Museums Worcestershire senior curator Deborah Fox said: “It is our great pleasure to present works of such international calibre here at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum.
“This is an opportunity for visitors to see the work of well-known artists in a new fashion: much is made of landscape and seascape within European art, but little is said of the sky. This exhibition, created by the Ashmolean Museum, sheds new light on a fascinating subject.”
“Visitors are invited to escape the winter cold and enjoy beautiful blue skies and majestic sunsets.”
This exhibition has been organised by the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford.
