THERE will be a treat for steam railway fans tomorrow (Sunday) when the first Shakespeare Express of the new running season travels between Worcester and Stratford, writes Neil Gordon.
The popular steam hauled train’s journey will mark the 40th anniversary of the train’s inaugural run.
Steam locomotive 7029 Clun Castle or 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe will haul the train in both directions to the delight of passengers and onlookers.
Currently, the train is set to depart Worcester Shrub Hill at 10.16am, Droitwich Spa 10.28am and Stourbridge Junction at 11.03am, before arriving in Stratford-on-Avon at 12.46pm.
After a break of around four hours for passengers to enjoy sightseeing and shopping, the train departs Stratford at 4.48pm and arrives back at Stourbridge Junction at 6.13pm, Droitwich Spa at 6.40pm and Worcester Shrub Hill at 6.55pm.
Organisers Vintage Trains are also offering people the opportunity to travel behind the class 37 diesel locomotive, number 37240, that will haul the train between Birmingham and Worcester in the morning, and again in the evening from Worcester back to Birmingham.
