THE West Mercia Police region has some of the nation’s biggest speeders with its motorists the second worst offenders in in the UK according to a Freedom of Information request.

The highest speed recorded on our roads last year was 162mph with West Mercia at second place with an incredible 160mph.

Avon and Somerset – home to Bristol, Bath and Taunton had the highest number of speeders, with over 163,000 fixed penalty notices issued in 2018.

In comparison, West Mercia was second place again, with 90,203 speeding fines issued in 2018 – one for every 13 people in the constabulary.

The area where the least amount of speeding tickets were issued was Gwent, then Bedfordshire and Wiltshire regions.

Drivers in Lincolnshire were least likely to be texting behind the wheel, with no offences recorded while drivers in West Yorkshire were caught the most on their mobile phone, followed by Essex and Hampshire constabularies.

The information came from a FOI request from car dealership Dick Lovett.
