WEATHER WARNING - Storm Agnes set to bring high winds and heavy rain

Worcester Editorial 26th Sep, 2023   0

A YELLOW weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for heavy rain and high winds.

The conditions, caused by the tail end of Storm Agnes, are set to rip through the region between midday tomorrow (Wednesday) and 7am on Thursday morning.

Weather experts warn there is a danger to life and injury from flying debris.

They also forecast damage to buildings, power cuts and the chance of mobile phone coverage, bus and train services being impacted.

The wind and rain could lead to rivers swelling and flash flooding.

People are urged to take care to protect themselves and their property and, if caught in the high winds and heavy rain and need to travel, to delay their journey.

Motorists should:

Top–up. Fuel, oil and screen wash.

Rest. Take a rest break every two hours.

Inspect. Check tyre pressure and tread.

Prepare. Have a plan for all weather conditions.

Steve Basterfield, National Network Manager at National Highways, said: “With the stormy weather being forecast, it is important to plan ahead for your journey, and if weather conditions become challenging, adjust your driving behaviour and take extra care.

“It’s also a good idea for people to check their vehicles, such as tyres, coolant and oil levels, before heading out to reduce the risk of breakdowns.”

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert said: “Gusts of 45-55 mph are expected widely inland and 50-60 mph over hills and around coasts.”
