Waste not want not is message

Worcester Editorial 24th Apr, 2017   0

A CAMPAIGN to raise awareness of food waste took to the streets of Worcester last week to highlight the amount of food an average family would throw away a year.

The Feed the 1000 event saw a thousands portions of free food handed out to show how many people could be fed on the volume of waste that a family of four throws away in a year.

Hundreds of people stopped at the stall in the city centre last Tuesday (April 18), with a thousand people fed in less than four hours. The food provided was chickpea and vegetable curry, vegetable fritters and salad.

The event was organised by Worcestershire County Council, the University of Worcester and Worcester City Council to help raise awareness of the on going Love Food Hate Waste campaign.

Students at the stall also gave out leaflets to those who received food, which detailed the 10 golden rules for living sustainably; they also gave people advice for reducing food waste.

Emma Stuart, Waste Prevention Project Manager for Worcestershire County Council, said: “This event certainly kicked off the Go Green Week in great style with the people of Worcester enjoying their food in the sunshine.

“So many people were astounded at the amount of people that could be fed on the volume of waste that a family of four throws away in a year. I hope those people have taken away the messages of the Love Food Hate Waste campaign and will start to use them to help reduce their own food waste.

Katy Boom, the University of Worcester’s Director of Sustainability, said: “The response from residents and visitors to Worcester has been fantastic.

“Not only did they enjoy the delicious food and were shocked by the amount of wastage, but many people said that they were impressed by the idea of having a week of raising sustainability awareness organised by students.

“There were some great recipes as well as ideas and tips swapped to make the most of the produce we buy, which we hope means people in Worcester will be throwing away less food unnecessarily.”
