SkyWalk is ‘a waste of money’ say city residents

RESIDENTS questioned by the Observer over the plans for the £12.5million SkyWalk believe the scheme is ‘a waste of money’.

The main city area already has the Sabrina Bridge which connects the University of Worcester and the main shopping areas. And members of the public who spoke to us felt there was no need for another walkway.

Tom Baldwin works in the city centre and said: “If the Sabrina Bridge was not there it would be more worthwhile but it does look nice, so maybe they should get rid of the Sabrina Bridge and just have that one.”

Designer One Creative Environments Ltd said the Green SkyWalk will ‘put Worcester securely on the map’ and generate 500 new jobs by attracting new business.

However Mr Baldwin added: “I think if they are looking for a return on their £12.5million, I’d say don’t bother.”

Designers behind the project have yet to secure funding. Whether or not the public supported the new build, seemed to depend on where the money will come from.

Kelly Smith also works in the city, she said: “I feel like £12.5million is a lot of money but it depends on whose gong to pay for it. I don’t even use the current bridge.”

The project will be going for planning permission in the summer and if funding is found construction could start as soon as this autumn.

Creators said the walkway will connect vital areas such as The Hive, University for Worcester city campus and Foregate Street station.

Alex Wood said: “There’s no reason to build it, it’s not going to get used. It would be good if it went to Shrub Hill, but it’s not like the bridges and connections we have now are rubbish.”
