Warm reception for new energy play

SCHOOLCHILDREN across the city are being encouraged to think about the environment through a new play.

Targeted at seven to 11-year-olds, the play commissioned by Worcester Bosch with the help of Worcester Live, will raise awareness of energy use with appearances from Bobby the Boiler and Solar Sam.

Children from Oasis Academy Warndon, were the first to enjoy the play and 50 more schools in Worcestershire will be visited by the energy efficient characters by the end of this month.

The play was written by Chris Jaeger from Worcester Live and the lead roles are played by two renowned actors from Worcester’s local theatre.

The partnership with Worcester Bosch, Group was developed as part of Worcester’s ongoing commitment to the local community.

Sue Pennington, consumer brand manager at Worcester, Bosch Group said: “Energy-efficiency is something that is close to our hearts at Worcester and an intrinsic part of all of the products we manufacture and we are keen to ensure this ethos is held by the wider community.

“We will engage with children and help them understand how simple activities, such as turning off lights and not leaving electrical items on standby, can make a huge difference to preserving the environment.

“We hope that the pupils enjoy the play and we look forward to hearing about their energy saving techniques when we next visit.”

As a reminder of the themes, pupils will also be presented with an Eco-Warrior badge to certify they are helping to combat energy wastage; and an energy activity pack will be left with the school so pupils can continue to learn about the subject long after the characters have left.

Worcester is also encouraging the children to take part in their national Environment 2020 art competition where they can show their ideas of what an energy efficiency world looks like.

The pupils can use any creative skill including photography, sculpture, collages or a simply line drawing to depict their ideas.

Rachel Blow, deputy principal at Oasis Academy Warndon, said: “The play excited the children greatly and they all loved having Bobby the Boiler and Solar Sam in the school.

“The environment is so important and there are many things we can all be doing to cut down on wasted energy through to reducing the amount of rubbish we throw away. We hope knowing the difference that can be made will be habits our pupils take on as they grow older too.”
