Urgent plea to help bring city man home

A DESPERATE appeal to raise the £12,000 needed to bring a Worcester father stranded in Spain after a severe stroke has been launched.

Alan Cameron-Cartwright, 70, remains in the San Rafael hospital in Granada despite being cleared to return to Worcester on December 21 by his doctors.

Affectionately known as ‘Al Groat’ and ‘Ambulance Al’, Alan suffered a severe stroke in late October, leaving him paralysed on his right side.

He has so far been covered for his immediate treatment in Spain with his GHIC card but will not be covered going forward.

Caring friends have set up a Go Fund Me page to cover the sum needed to transport him home to the Worcestershire Royal Hospital for urgent medical care.

He had been travelling when the stroke happened, leaving him stuck overseas.

“We urgently need to bring him back to the UK so he can receive NHS treatment in Worcestershire Royal Hospital and begin his rehabilitation to recover from the stroke,” friends of his wrote on the page.

“This will also mean that his friends and family will be around to visit him and give him the aftercare that he needs.

“All the signs so far are good, he has been responding well and is able to communicate.

“He is however still in a critical condition and needs NHS treatment now. The changing rules in Spain mean he is no longer be able to receive visitors which will not be good for his overall condition.

“This is now urgent that we bring him home.

“Patient transport from Spain is expensive. We need to raise £12,000 to bring him back from Spain and get him to Worcestershire Royal Hospital as quickly as we can as he needs now to begin rehabilitation.

“Please give what you can, no matter how small, let’s do this for Al.

“He has always been ready and willing to help others so let’s help him get the treatment he needs.

“Then he can get back to his former self and be singing those songs! We have got an HMRC recommended transport which will cost less. But we still need to raise the rest of the funds.”
