University of Worcester's nurse training course shortlisted for prestigious award

Worcester Editorial 19th Feb, 2018   0

UNIVERSITY of Worcester’s nurse training course has been shortlisted for a prestigious award, writes Nicole Chivers.

The programme has been named as the Nurse Education Provider of the Year for the fifth time in six years, whilst Winyates Health Centre in Redditch has been nominated for Student Placement of the Year, and Clare Helm from Salters Medical Practice in Droitwich has been listed for Mentor of the Year.

The winners from the nominations will be announced at a ceremony in London on April 26.

Clare Helm, a nurse herself of over 30 years, has been mentoring the students at her practice for over 18 months and the Winyates Health Centre has been having the university students on placement with it for more than two years.

The nursing students there study three of the major fields of health practice – adult, children’s and mental health.

The achievement illustrates students are comprehensively trained and that the university’s students are starting to raise the standards of professional nursing, both whilst they are still students, and after further study or going into the workplace.

Robert Dudley, the university’s head of nursing, said he was thrilled to have been shortlisted for the three accolades at the Students Nursing Times Awards.

“It is a real positive for the people and their Health Service to have outstanding new nurses who are not only equipped with the skills to know what to do but who are equally adept at thinking about why and how.”
