Unite gives £1,500 for rape abuse centre funds

Worcester Editorial 23rd Jan, 2022   0

UNION chiefs at the Herefordshire and Worcestershire branch of Unite the Union has donated £1,500 to the West Mercia Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre (WMRSASC)

WMRSASC has encountered financial difficulties recently with its counselling service having to close its doors to new referrals last summer.

Although the waiting list for the service has reopened since, the centre still has to contend with a lack of funding, and donations are essential for its continued operation.

Unite chiefs backed a proposal to match the proceeds raised by a fund-raising concert held at Worcester’s Marr’s Bar venue the previous day.

Dan Roberts, chair of the branch, said: “Our members have taken the decision that they want our Union branch to make a real difference in the community.

“Last year we made a range of donations to local football clubs and this year we’re going to continue to support important causes.

“The cuts to key services like that provided by WMRSASC is something we have seen consistently since 2010.

“As a union we believe these services should be fully funded by the government but we will try our best to support where we can in their absence.

“Hopefully this donation ensures more victims of gendered violence get the support they need.”

WMRSASC provides free and confidential support, advocacy, counselling, advice, and information to anybody affected by sexual violence, including children and young people.
