THE UNIVERSITY of Worcester is glowing green after being ranked in the top five most sustainable universities in the UK.
People and Planet’s 2016 ‘University League’ placed Worcester fifth out of 150 universities across the country, with a score of 72.8 per cent.
The campaigning group looks at all UK public funded universities and uses public information provided by them to assess areas like waste and recycling, sustainable food, energy sources, engagement and education.
Katy Boom, director of sustainability at the University of Worcester, said: “We’re delighted to have been rated once again in the top five universities for sustainability in the UK.
“This is down to the collective work of the University and the Students’ Union, both on campus and in the community.
“We’re always looking for imaginative ways to engage our students and staff in sustainability. We’ve produced a recycling guide and reusable recycling bags for our student landlords, as well as setting up a bike borrowing scheme.
“We’re working very hard to manage our carbon footprint. All of our future building plans aim to create a modern, very sustainable campus.”
Hannah Smith, People and Planet co-director, said: “What impresses us most about Worcester is their consistency. The University scored 100 per cent in six of the 13 People and Planet league categories.
“They’ve shown impressive work in renewable energy and have developed teaching and learning that aims to enable students and future communities to meet climate and social justice issues with solutions.”
