THE SELFLESS community work of two Worcester charity workers has been recognised by the high sheriff.
Maggs Day Centre, a homeless charity based in the city, hosted its annual general meeting recently and saw two of its long-standing staff and volunteers awarded the prestigious high sheriff award.
The award is dedicated to celebrating the work of individuals and organisations within Worcestershire who have made outstanding contributions to the communities in which they live or work and Maggs recognised the hard work of Margarita White and Sue Osborne.
Charles Moyle, high sheriff of Worcestershire, said: “The volunteers and staff of all our charities and community organisations in Worcestershire are the very glue holding together and supporting the most vulnerable people in our county.
“Nowhere is this better exemplified than with the quite extraordinary team at Maggs. To a man and woman they dedicate their lives to ensure those less fortunate have dignity, hope, food and shelter. They are in many cases ‘life savers’ and I salute their herculean efforts to help bring about a better place for all to live in.”
The first award was given to Maggs worker, Margarita, who started with Maggs over 11 years ago as a volunteer and now steers the ship for its Intensive Transition Team provision. Margarita is well known throughout the community for her exceptional work ethic and drive to provide the best, not only for her service users but also for her fellow team members.
The second goes to Sue, who has been with Maggs for 12 years as a trustee but even longer as a volunteer at the day centres. Sue has been a fantastic advocate for Maggs and those experiencing homelessness for over 25 years, not only through her internal roles but also through her employment at Worcester City Council as a housing and homeless officer.
Andy Price, chief executive at Maggs Day Centre, added: “Both Margarita and Sue have demonstrated such fabulous commitment and service to Maggs and we’re thrilled to be able to honour them in such a marvellous way. I want to thank them both for all that they have done for Maggs and the people we work with and for so passionately advocating for their needs.”
