Tributes paid to former Elgar School chief

Worcester Editorial 12th Aug, 2018   0

TRIBUTES have been paid to the former principal of the Elgar School of Music Donald Hunt OBE who has died aged 88.

Mr Hunt, who passed away last Saturday, was also the brainchild of the Bromsgrove International Musicians’ Competition, conceiving the idea for the prestigious contest with the late Mary White.

His extraordinary contribution to music also included Worcester Cathedral and Three Choirs Festival.

He served for some years as Artistic Director of the Bromsgrove Festival and many will fondly recall his passion and exuberance as a talented musician and conductor.

The competition chairman Ian Morris said: “Donald Hunt’s foresight led to the foundation of what is now The Bromsgrove International Musicians’ Competition nearly 40 years ago.

“Without his inspiration, Bromsgrove town would not now attract young world class musicians to take part in this premier competition or be known in musical circles around the globe.”

Donald will be fondly remembered during the 39th Annual Musicians Competition in Routh Concert Hall at Bromsgrove School next April.

A spokesperson for the competition said: “Our thoughts and condolences are with Donald’s family and friends at this time.”

Mr Hunt is survived by his wife Jo and their children Jacqueline, Tom, Nick and Jane.
