Talking about some of school’s strategies

BISHOP Perowne CE College assistant headteacher Callum Aitken recently addressed an audience of teachers from around the country at the Achieve Equity Conference, which took place at the University of Birmingham.

The Achieve Equity Conference is an event run by RADY (Raising the Attainment of Disadvantaged Youngsters).

The organisation challenges leaders to improve school systems and processes, raise aspirations and improve the life chances of disadvantaged young people across the UK.

Mr Aitken said: “The innovative work and research that RADY does is helping to transform outcomes for disadvantaged pupils, so it was wonderful to have the opportunity to speak at the Achieve Equity Conference.

“RADY’s approach to raising attainment focuses on making changes to schools’ target setting, tracking, and monitoring systems – which often inadvertently set lower targets for disadvantaged children. Pilot studies of the RADY tracking system have shown extremely positive results.

“At Bishop Perowne, we share RADY’s commitment to closing the attainment gap between disadvantaged children and other children and providing effective teaching support to the pupils who need it – when they need it.”

Jane Price, headteacher at Bishop Perowne CE College, added: “We were very proud to see Mr Aitken present at the Achieve Equity Conference to discuss some of the strategies we use at Bishop Perowne to ensure all our students receive the best possible opportunities and outcomes.

“It was recognition of the achievement of disadvantaged pupils at our school, and the commitment shown by all our staff.
