Talk to pharmacist to aid minor conditions this winter urge health chiefs

HARD-pressed health chiefs in Worcestershire are encouraging residents to talk to their pharmacist if they need help and advice managing minor health conditions this winter.

Ask Your Pharmacist Week runs from November 6-13 and aims to raise awareness of the services on offer there to help people stay well over winter.

Pharmacists are trained to help people treat themselves for many common conditions, such as colds, flu, stomach bugs and aches and pains, which can be especially prevalent when the temperature drops.

Local doctors say most minor conditions can be treated at home, and the local pharmacist can provide advice and support to help people get back on your feet as soon as possible.

Additional benefits can include medicines reviews to ensure people are taking the right medication at the right time, the use of private consulting rooms and healthy living advice.

Pharmacies can also offer flu vaccinations, and testing for common conditions like high/low blood pressure and diabetes.

Jane Freeguard of the three doctor-led Clinical Commissioning Groups in Worcestershire, said: “Many people don’t realise the wide range of services available at their local pharmacy.

“They offer free expert advice on a wide range of health issues, support for self-care and medicines to treat common complaints such as coughs and colds, flu, sore throats, earache, backache, stomach upsets and cuts and grazes.

“Pharmacists are highly trained to offer help and support to patients and they’re available without the need to book an appointment.”
