Swapping the classroom for the farm

Worcester Editorial 13th Sep, 2017   0

A WORCESTER alternative education provider has welcomed a new recruit as Craig Swainland swapped the classroom for the farm.

Bonterre welcomed the former Aston Fields Middle School teacher to its 15 acre farm just outside Holt Heath.

Mr Swainland had been working at the Bromsgrove school for the past 10 years and pupils and parents were sad to see him go in July.

Bonterre uses the land, animals and the natural environment as a medium with which to engage children and young people.

Managing director, Mike Stringer said: “We recognise that the conventional classroom is not the best learning environment for many children and we have shown that the outdoors provides a rich environment to learn and apply knowledge.

“With Craig on board we can provide a wider provision of science, maths and farming activities for school trips as well as teaching basic skills to our regular pupils.”
