Supported learning students create special mural to mark World Mental Health Day

Worcester Editorial 4th Oct, 2024   0

SUPPORTED learning students from Worcestershire have created a special mural which promotes positivity, mindfulness and motivation ahead of World Mental Health Day.

WCG is set to host a range of presentations and workshops as well as welcome representatives from a variety of external organisations to raise awareness of mental health and drive positive change, as well as educate both students and staff about the support that is available.

The college group, which includes Pershore College and Evesham New College, are holding these from October 7 to 11, including on World Mental Health Day itself on October 10.

Ahead of this, a group of supported learning students from Pershore College have created a special mural entitled ‘Take a Moment, Reach Out’ which focuses on the importance of reaching out for support.

The students were joined by Judith Abbott, Specialist Support Lead for Mental Health at WCG, who delivered a session on mental health before the students worked together to create the artwork.

The mural also contains motivational and mindfulness stations, featuring motivational quotes and positive affirmations for students and staff to take away.

It will be on display at the college throughout the week, and a photograph of the artwork will be displayed at the other WCG colleges.

There will also be a programme of presentations and activities covering a wide range of topics which will be available to all students and staff.

A number of staff training sessions will also take place throughout the week, covering topics such as drug use and how to have open conversations about it, mental health at work, young carers, and grief and loss.

Judith said: “The students have done an excellent job at creating a mural which highlights the importance of positive mental health and reaching out for support.

“This will be a perfect centrepiece for our week of activities and events to mark World Mental Health Day.

“The week will not only raise awareness of mental health, but act as a chance to talk about mental health in general, how we need to look after it, and how important it is to talk about things and get help if you are struggling.

“It will also help educate our students and staff about the wide range of support services available where they can access this help.
