Step forward to represent county

Worcester Editorial 24th Feb, 2017   0

ASPIRING politicians across Worcestershire are being invited to learn more about standing in the upcoming County Council elections.

A ‘Candidates Day’ is being held at County Hall from 2pm to 4.30pm on Tuesday (February 28).

The poll is due to take place across Worcestershire on May 4 and almost anyone can put themselves forward as long as they meet the criteria.

The role carries a number of responsibilities and obligations which will be detailed during the day.

The event will begin with an introduction by returning officer Simon Mallinson at 2pm before a briefing by West Mercia Police at 2.05pm which will go through election offences people should be aware of.

At 2.20pm there will be a briefing by district council nominees on the mechanics of standing for election and at 3.15pm there will be a briefing from county council offers on the council itself.

That will be introduced by Chief Executive Clare Marchant and include information on children’s services, finances, partnerships, highways and roads, adult social care and an overview of Worcestershire’s demographics and challenges.

Mr Mallinson said the Candidates’ Day would be a great first step for those interested in standing on May 4.

“This can sometimes appear a little daunting and Candidates’ Day can help prospective candidates fully understand the process, as well as the legal foundations of standing for election, and the roles and responsibilities of a councillor.”

The notice of election will be published on March 20 and prospective candidates have until 4pm on April 4 to get their nomination papers submitted.
