Severe weather set to batter county over weekend

Worcester Editorial 18th Jul, 2014 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

A SEVERE weather warning has been issued for the county over the weekend.

The Met Office has forecast heavy rain and thunderstorms across Worcestershire from the early hours of Saturday (July 19) morning.

An amber warning, which urges residents to ‘be prepared’, was issued after forecasters predicted large hail, strong gusts, torrential rain and lighting could all be possible for almost 24 hours from 12.15am until 11.45pm.

Due to the downpours areas within both counties are also at risk of flooding.

A statement on the organisation’s website said the public should be aware of disruption on the roads due to the elements.

It follows a build up of very warm and humid air towards the end of this week.

A Met Office chief forecaster said: “The very warm and humid airmass across the UK will become increasingly unstable on Friday night and through Saturday.

“This will lead to the development of areas of intense thunderstorms, these moving northwards across the UK and affecting different areas at various times through the day.

“In this situation, large amounts of energy are available in the atmosphere and this, coupled with high moisture content, can lead to torrential downpours along with frequent lightning activity, large hail and locally strong gusts.

“As is usually the case with thunderstorms, broad areas can be identified as at risk some time in advance but detail will remain very uncertain until very close to the event.

“Some areas will miss the worst of the storms whilst nearby spots experience severe downpours with some localised flooding, so the public are advised stay in touch with the latest forecasts and warnings through Saturday.”
