Scare after Foregate Street station evacuated over suspicious package

Worcester Editorial 22nd Aug, 2017   0

WORCESTER commuters were evacuated from Foregate Street station yesterday (Monday) after a suspicious package was found on a train.

West Mercia Police responded to a report at 4.41pm regarding a suspicious package on a train within the station, which led to them putting in place a 100m cordon.

The suspicious package was later found to be a water bottle with a security tag around it and after confirming that it was not a threat to the public, the cordon was lifted and the station re-opened.

A West Mercia spokesperson said: “The report is believed to have been made with good intent. We do encourage members of the public to remain vigilant and to report suspicious items and activities, so we’re grateful to the caller for enabling us ensure there was no risk to members of the public.

“We understand this closure may have caused delays to commuters on their journey and we appreciate your patience and understanding whilst we responded to ensure there was no risk to the public.”
