Safety audit on Ketch roundabout junction

WORK has been undertaken in a bid to improve the controversial lay out of the Ketch roundabout.

Urgent calls had been made to suspend the work on the A4440 Southern Link Road over fears of a ‘serious head-on collision’ on one of the busiest routes to Worcester.

Worcestershire County Council subsequently brought forward a safety audit for the £40million scheme. Having started on Saturday (June 13), it has now been completed.

Changes include hatching out the merger lane exiting the roundabout onto Carrington Bridge, removal of the straight on arrow on the right-hand lane approach from the Norton roundabout and improving the circulatory markings on the roundabout.

The problem was initially highlighted by Worcestershire County Councillor Tom Wells, after he posted a video to Facebook showing the dangers of the junction.

The video has been viewed more than 80,000 times and a petition calling for safety measures to be imposed racked up more than 1,200 supporters.

Jon Fraser, from Worcestershire County Council highways, said: “Public safety is our number one priority.

“This is why we took action to put temporary traffic management arrangements in place and brought forward the planned safety audit of the scheme.

“We promised the public we would take immediate action as soon as we had an agreed approach. This approach has now been agreed.

“As with all new road layouts, traffic flows will continue to be monitored in the weeks ahead.”
