WORCESTER’s MP Robin Walker writes for the Observer…

The past couple of weeks in politics have been dominated by the Conference recess and I was pleased by Chancellors Rishi Sunak’s announcement that the Government’s Kickstart Scheme which has been helping young people on Universal Credit to find work will be extended to March next year, as part of a £500 million job support package.

This will help young people in Worcester and across the UK as it delivers funding for employers offering new job roles for 16-24 years old who are currently in receipt of Universal Credit, helping to prevent young people who are currently unemployed from facing long term unemployment. This is especially important as those who have come off furlough and are on Universal Credit will be prioritised when it comes to finding jobs as one in three people under the age of 25 were on furlough during the pandemic.

As well as support for young people, it was pleasing to see support for unemployed over-50s to help stay in and get back to work. For those over 50 who have lost their job lost their jobs, this funding will ensure they receive more intensive, tailored support.

During my time as MP for Worcester, I have always advocated for the importance of quality apprenticeships, and it was encouraging to see the £3,000 incentive for employers taking on new apprentices will be extended until the end of January.

Locally in Worcester, I, along with the other Worcestershire MPs met with the Acute Hospitals NHS Trust to keep up the progress with capital spending and recruitment

It was remarkable to see 20 former mayors of Worcester, alongside the current Mayor Councillor Stephen Hodgson to celebrate 400 years of the city’s charter from King James the 1st which created the mayoralty. I am proud to represent such a proud and vibrant city in parliament and it was fantastic to see such a great showing of past and present mayors.
