Rising star is win for Amy

A WORCESTERSHIRE-based community nurse scooped success when she was named the Rising Star at the Nursing Times Awards for 2022.

Amy Turton, a learning disability (RNLD) nurse, won the ‘Ann Shuttleworth Rising Star’ award at the ceremony last week.

Held every year since 2019, the awards are one of the biggest community nursing events in Europe, which recognise the best talent in the field. With more than 25 categories, the awards cover a range of specialties, from mental health to clinical research.

The ‘Rising Star’ award recognises a nurse working in the NHS or independent sector who has been qualified for less than five years and has demonstrated exceptional qualities in nursing, such as compassionate care and leadership.

“I feel so valued, appreciated, and supported by my team and everyone around me. This award shines a light on the learning disability nursing profession and highlights the value of our work,” Amy said.

Amy’s unswerving dedication to her patients and team particularly impressed the judges, who said she was ‘a true advocate for patients’ who ensures the voice of the most vulnerable is heard.

Kathryn Hankins, community services manager for Learning Disabilities said: “Amy is a dedicated, energetic, and motivated nurse who has worked tenaciously to rise from her original role as a valued healthcare support worker in our Community Learning Disabilities services, to become a Learning Disability Nurse and now an aspiring Advanced Clinical Practice Nurse.

“We know Amy to be as inspiring and ambitious for her patients, students, and colleagues, as she is for herself.

“It is wonderful to have been able to share this event with her and watch her be recognised as the fantastic RNLD that she is,” she said.
