Revamped Angel Place market is back in business

Worcester Editorial 3rd Dec, 2014 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

A NEW era for Worcester’s Angel Place market will begin today (Wednesday) following a £550,000 revamp.

Almost 40 different traders selling a variety of goods have moved into the stylish new branded stalls outside CrownGate Shopping Centre ahead of this week’s launch.

The re-opening of the market also marks the completion of the scheme which got underway in September as council bosses looked to breathe new life into the area.

Stall holders, who were offered temporary units on the High Street while work was carried out, have returned to the site along with a number of new traders.

And Dermot McGillicuddy, director at LSD Promotions, which has been appointed by Worcester City Council to manage all the city’s markets and run the Victoria Christmas Fayre from next year, said the response from traders to the new-look Angel Place had been “remarkable”.

“Worcester’s new market is off to a fantastic start, with an incredible range of goods and food available on the first day,” he said.

“We’re running markets three days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays to create exciting market days that will create a buzz around the city and really bring in the customers. We know from experience that this will be good for traders and good for shoppers.

“What we are aiming to do is build up the profile of the new market and provide a platform for the extra events we’re planning to launch at Easter, with ‘up-market’ Sundays and antique days on Fridays.”

Fresh fish, cheese, Peruvian clothing, cosmetics and jewellery are just some of the good which will be on sale at the new market for the first time.

A butcher will also be open for business, alongside street food specialist Feast Street and money advice charity Two Pennies, while charity Midlands Birds Of Prey Rescue will give shoppers a chance to come face to beak with owls and other birds.

Coun Simon Geraghty, leader of Worcester City Council, which has helped fund the scheme along with Worcestershire County Council and The Crown Estate – the owners of Crown Gate shopping centre, said he was delighted by the refurbishment.

“Worcestershire Highways have carried out a first-class job and the area looks fantastic,” he said. “The refurbishment, which was completed on schedule, makes Angel Place an attractive and inviting part of the city for shoppers.

“This is one of three key pedestrian gateways to the city. The City and the County Councils are working to transform and raise the quality of public spaces in Worcester.”
