Residents add their names to cut speed campaign

CAMPAIGNERS aiming to reduce the speed limit on a residential street used as a short cut between two of the city’s busiest roads have submitted a petition to the county council.

Green Party member Neal Murphy handed the 141-name document to Worcestershire County Council last Thursday (January 15) which calls for a 20 miles per hour zone in the Blanquettes estate.

Along with fellow party members Coun Matthew Jenkins and Coun Neil Laurenson, Mr Murphy carried out a door-to-door petition in the area and 84 per cent of those questioned were in favour of the changes because of drivers using the area as a cut through between Bilford Road and Droitwich Road.

Mr Murphy said: “In response to comments made on the doorstep during regular contact with residents on the Blanquettes estate, we conducted a survey asking whether speeding traffic in the estate was of sufficient concern to warrant action.

“We started a petition and found most people we spoke with supported the introduction of a 20 miles per hour zone.

“Roads on the estate are used as a short cut to avoid delays on Bilford Road and Droitwich Road.

“Parents have expressed concern for the safety of their children and residents are concerned for the safety of their pets, with some telling of cats being hit and killed by speeding motorists.

“Safer streets are more likely to encourage school children to walk to school, making for a healthier start and end to their day and taking some of the excess traffic away from busy roads outside schools during the start and end of the school day.”

Green Party members have proposed there is no need for additional speed bumps, simply 20 miles per hour signs on the entrance to the streets.

At the full council meeting last Thursday, County council chairman Coun Pam Davey said a written response from all relevant cabinet members would be received in due course.
