Pub showcasing our local artists

A POPULAR Worcester pub is set to put local artists in the frame with a permanent exhibition space to help them showcase their talents.

The Cap ‘n’ Gown pub on Upper Tything will launch the first exhibition on Thursday from 5.30pm to 7pm.

Landlord Ted Marshall came up with the idea of having an ‘art wall’ in the pub after visiting artists during last August’s Worcestershire Open Studios. He approached the organisers of the popular annual event and offered the pub as a year round space for displaying local artists’ work.

The first exhibition will show artwork by Worcestershire Open Studios organisers – printmaker and painter Sally Anne Morgan, photographer Richard Nicholls and abstract painter Cherrie Mansfield.

“I hope this exhibition will be the first of many in partnership with Worcestershire Open Studios, showing the talent and work of local artists. The Cap ‘n’ Gown is a community focussed pub and I’m pleased to be able to offer the space as another way of connecting different sections of the community,” he said.

“I’d encourage anyone interested in seeing what we’re doing to pop in on the evening to see the artwork and meet the artists who created it. After that the artwork can be viewed during normal pub opening hours.”

The display will change on a regular basis and will showcase a diverse range of work by some of the artists participating in Worcestershire Open Studios.

Cherrie Mansfield, one of the Worcestershire Open Studios organisers said, “We’re really excited to be working with the Cap ‘n’ Gown – it’s a first for us. With a shortage of exhibition space in the city, this is a great venture that will enable local artists to show their work to a wider audience year round.

“We appreciate Ted’s generosity and look forward to working with him.”

The event will once again take over the August bank holiday weekend, from Saturday 25 to Monday, August 27.
