Proud moment for cadets and families

Worcester Editorial 30th Sep, 2018   0

PARENTS and family joined the Mayor of Worcester Coun Jabba Riaz, the High Sheriff Cassian Roberts and other invited guests for a service of dedication of the Worcester Troop, B Company, Hereford and Worcester Army Cadet Force new Standard at the Army Cadet Centre in Worcester.

The cadets have spent several months raising the necessary funding, finally reaching the total required with donations from the Divisional Funds of Councillors Pat Agar and Andy Roberts and former councillor Steve Mackay.

This is the first time the troop has had its own Standard.

The evening commenced with tea and cake with donations invited in aid of Help for Heroes. Guests were able to wander at will among the various display stands and discuss the content with the cadets.

These included a Skill at Arms Stand involving displays of weapons used by the cadets, First Aid skills, Field Craft Display focusing on the tactics used when attacking an enemy, a BTEC and Duke of Edinburgh Award stand highlighting the opportunities available to cadets, a Help for Heroes stand and a Recruitment stand encouraging adults to enrol as instructors.

At the appointed time with all guests seated, the cadets formed up and were inspected by Colonel Richard Hopkins, the Battalion’s Commandant. Lieutenant James Edwards, Detachment Commander for Worcester Troop formally welcomed everyone to the dedication and this was followed by the Blessing of the new Standard by Captain Paul Roberts, the Army Cadet Padre. The evening concluded with an address and presentation by Colonel Richard Hopkins.

Lieutenant James Edwards said “I was extremely proud of the cadets, not only for their achievements throughout the year but also their work in the local community. It is right and proper they have Standard which represents their achievements and sense of belonging.

“We are thankful for the help from the councillors and Sandra Taylor from Remember the Fallen for their help in raising the money for the detachment Standard.”

Worcester Troop, Hereford and Worcester Army Cadet Force, parade at Great Western Avenue, Worcester from 7pm to 9.30pm on Monday evenings.
