A CAR thief was handed an 18-month community order after being spotted trying door handles in Fernhill Heath.

Travis Attwood, 27, of no fixed abode in Worcester, yesterday (Tuesday) pleaded guilty to 12 offences at Kidderminster Magistrates Court.

Attwood was arrested by patrol officers on the night shift after being seen by off duty police trying car door handles.

He was convicted of three counts of vehicle interference, two thefts from a motor vehicle, six counts of fraud by false representation and a public order offence.

He was handed an 18-month community order and ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid work and fined £890.

Attwood was charged by the Neighbourhood Crime Fighting Team which has been launched by West Mercia Police to tackle the crime and anti-social behaviour causing the most harm in local communities.

Sgt Shaun Blackshaw of South Worcestershire NCFT said: “This is an excellent job by the NCFT officers to secure so many convictions against this prolific offender.

“Vehicle crime is a focus for my team as we know the harm it causes and the and concerns it raises in our communities.

“We are committed to bringing these individuals to justice and urge the public to report any suspicious behaviour to us.

“I’d also ask members of the public to ensure they lock their vehicles and remove any valuables out of sight.”
