Police tackling a rise in car key burglaries with awareness drive

Worcester Editorial 23rd Apr, 2018   0

A CAMPAIGN has been launched to warn motorists about car key burglaries after a rise in the crime across the whole West Midlands.

The drive has been started by the charity Crimestoppers to combat the practice which sees raiders break into homes and take car keys before making off in the vehicle.

The criminals involved target high-powered, high-value vehicles and can often `cruise’ around an area in the hunt for opportunities.

Nationally, in the twelve months to June 2017, over 100,000 vehicle thefts were recorded by police in England and Wales which is a rise of around a fifth.

Pauline Hadley, Crimestoppers’ West Midlands Regional manager, said: “Thieves are finding new ways to overcome impressive security measures being introduced by manufacturers.

“The best way to protect your vehicle, especially if it’s high-value and therefore more at risk, is to keep your car keys somewhere safe and out of sight.”

She added drivers should also use extra security systems such as immobilisers and visible security locks.

Information can also be given at www.crimestoppers-uk.org via an anonymous online form.
