Planners back new offering for Gheluvelt Park

PLANNING chiefs have approved plans to build new visitor facilities at a popular and award-winning Worcester park.

Councillors on the City Council’s Planning Committee gave the green light to the revamp of the Sons of Rest pavilion at Gheluvelt Park last Thursday (August 25).

The park’s new pavilion will be built in the exact same spot as the existing one, which is close to the park’s Splashpad water play area.

It will include six new toilets, one of which will be wheelchair accessible and baby changing facilities, as well as a refreshments kiosk that will serve teas, coffees, ice creams and snacks.

The new pavilion will be more energy efficient and will also house a community room which will be able to be used during the winter as well as over the summer.

Coun Jabba Riaz, Cabinet Member for Clean, Green and Leisure Services, said: “Our popular Splashpad has proved a real hit with visitors this summer and so I’m pleased that proposals to introduce even better facilities for next year are moving forward.

“We are committed to investing in Worcester’s parks and open spaces, and to maintaining the highest possible standards within them.”

The next step for planners at their meeting on September 21 is to give the go-ahead to find a building contractor and an operator for the new kiosk.

At the meeting, councillors also approved a new permanent sign showing the name of the park in a style which will blend in with Gheluvelt’s distinctive gates and railings at the main entrance to the park.
