Pensioners visit the city to discover more about Charles II

ONE of the city’s oldest buildings welcomed a group of Chelsea Pensioners from the Royal Hospital Chelsea who made the trip to Worcester to learn more about King Charles II.

The Commandery played host to the group who visited the city to discover more about the founder of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, where the Pensioners are based. King Charles II opened the hospital in 1681 to care for veterans who had been ‘broken by war or age’.

Each year the residents host a founder’s day celebration to remember the monarch.

Michael Allen from the Chelsea Pensioners said: “We’ve really enjoyed our visit, it was definitely worth the trip.”

Kerry Whitehouse from The Commandery led the tour and said “When they informed me they were all tour guides themselves I felt I would be under pressure, but they were so lovely and really eager to hear about The Battle of Worcester and Charles’ escape.”

The group continued their visit with lunch at the King Charles II pub to see more of the areas their founder fled during the Battle of Worcester.
