Outgoing RSPCA Chair - from Worcestershire - set to be made a CBE in The King's New Year Honours

THE OUTGOING Chairman of RSPCA, who is from Worcestershire, is to be made a CBE in The King’s New Year Honours.

René Olivieri served in the role for four years before stepping down from his role and was also formerly a trustee of the charity.

During his time as chair, he oversaw the board of trustees through the pandemic and did the same through the ongoing, and often challenging, cost-of-living crisis.

René has a particular interest in the welfare of farmed animals and was a founder of the Farm Animal Welfare Forum.

He continues his role as the vice chair and a trustee of RSPCA Assured.

He has also chaired and been a member on the boards of professional and charitable organisations across the arts, wildlife trusts, publishing and academia and is currently acting Chair of the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Chris Sherwood, the RSPCA’s chief executive, said: “I am delighted to congratulate René on the news of this wonderful achievement – what an honour to be recognised for services to charity.

“To be awarded CBE is an outstanding accolade, marking decades of dedication to improving animal welfare, as well as his commitment to nature and heritage. The animal world is undoubtedly better off thanks to his commitment.

“During his tenure as chair, René steered us through the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic, oversaw a period of significant modernisation and change, and presided over our new, ambitious ten-year strategy, Together for Animal Welfare.”

New Chair

The RSPCA’s new chair is Claire Horton CBE.

Claire’s appointments as a co-opted trustee and the chair will take effect from the start of the new year on January 1, 2024.

Her appointment is for a term of three years.

A charity spokesperson said: “We are excited to welcome Claire to the RSPCA, and for her leadership in directing our 12-strong board of trustees, who are responsible for the charity’s direction, overall strategy and finances.”
