A WORCESTER church member has received Maundy money from the Queen in recognition of her exemplary Christian service.

Margaret Jones, from the Diocese of Worcester, met with Her Majesty at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor on Thursday (March 24) to receive the money, along with Bishop John Inge of Worcester.

Margaret has served 11 years as churchwarden of St Michael’s Church in Dines Green and has been a member of the church for 48 years.

She has overseen the move from the old building into the new church and has spent 23 years as a dinner lady and cleaning supervisor at Dines Green Primary School.

“It’s was such an honour to be chosen to receive the Maundy money from the Queen,” Margaret said.

“When I received the letter I was in shock. I’m just an ordinary person and felt very nervous. My daughter came with me and it was lovely to meet Her Majesty,” she added.

The tradition of presenting alms on Maundy Thursday goes back to the 4th century and comes from the Latin word meaning commandment.

Bishop John said: “It’s always very moving to see such a large number of people receiving this token of appreciation from someone who herself has given such extraordinary Christian service over so many years.”
