New name needed for arts space

Worcester Editorial 28th Nov, 2018   0

CREATIVE city residents are being sought to help pick the name of the new arts space being developed at St Swithun’s Church.

The multi-million pound regeneration project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will transform the historically significant Georgian building into a unique arts space for Worcester in 2020.

Visitors can drop into the church on Saturday (December 1) during the Victorian Fayre to see plans for the new arts space and to vote for their favourite name from the final shortlist.

There will be a further chance to vote on Saturday, December 8 at a free family Christmas event as part of the #ThanksToYou National Lottery Celebration.

Visitors with a lottery ticket will be able to take part in a free family activity creating seasonal decorations inspired by the motifs and objects in St Swithun’s with renowned artist Becky Adams.

Becky’s work is centred on textile and book art providing a tactile link to past experience and it appears in several public collections including at the Victoria and Albert and Tate Gallery.

Hywel Pontin, centre manager of St Swithun’s at The Churches Conservation Trust, said: “We are so excited to transform St Swithun’s – a unique piece of Worcester’s heritage – into an arts space for the whole community to enjoy.

“We’d love the people of Worcester to drop in to see the plans and vote for their favourite name from our shortlist.”

St Swithun’s Church is cared for by heritage charity, The Churches Conservation Trust. As well as creating a brand new arts space for Worcester, over the next year the charity will be undertaking extensive repair work on the roof of the church ensuring that the building is watertight, protecting the complete Georgian interior.
