New generation on way thanks to Freemasons

Worcester Editorial 1st Mar, 2020   0

NIGERIA will be getting a new generation of surgeons, thanks to a £50,000 donation by the Worcestershire Freemasons.

The project, in Africa’s most populated country, is aimed at giving vital life-saving skills to surgical volunteers.

Essential attributes are needed in practices in the UK, however across Nigeria and the rest of Africa they are often not taught.

Prof Robert Lane, who is leading the project, said: “We’re very grateful for the generous grant from the Freemasons to help support the training of the West African College of Surgeons.”

The programme will train 30 Nigerian volunteer surgeons and nurses who will treat over 1,000 patients every year across the continent.

Donations from the Freemasons will fund travel and accommodation for all the trainee surgeons and other essential training equipment etc.

Chief Executive Dr David Staples of Grant Lodge England said: “As a doctor I was shocked to discover that across Africa 95% of people do not have access to a surgery.”
