WEST Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has offered her support to a Private Member’s Bill which aims to radically improve the life chances of people living with Down’s Syndrome.
Mrs Baldwin welcomed the Bill, introduced by Liam Fox in the House of Commons, which has cross party support and is expected to progress to becoming law.
Dr Fox won a place the in the annual ballot for MPs’ to introduce their own legislation and the former GP brought forward plans to improve the provision and outcomes for all those living with Down’s Syndrome in England.
The West Worcestershire MP joined colleagues in Westminster to promote the Bill and offered her backing.
“Many of us will know someone living with Down’s Syndrome and we can all agree that they must be offered the best possible support to allow them to live fulfilling and productive lives,” she said.
Dr Fox added: I am thrilled to bring forward a Bill to deal with the issues faced by those with Down syndrome.
“My aim is to deal with three main areas. The first is to de-stigmatise Down syndrome. The second is to ensure that current provision of services is improved.
“The third is to look ahead and deal with future issues, such as long-term care, in an era where, for the first time, many of those with Down syndrome will outlive their parents.”
