Memories of college life revealed

MEMORIES of life at New College Worcester have been recorded as part of the historic venue’s 150th anniversary.

A group of students recorded the memories and experiences of former pupils and staff to find out what it was really like at their school in the past.

Students interviewed a wide variety of people from both Worcester College, which catered for blind and partially sighted boys, and Chorleywood College, which did the same for girls.

The two came together in 1987 to create the current college.

Extracts from the interviews can be found on New College Worcester website at www.ncw.co.uk and the recordings of the interviews have been deposited at the Hive in Worcester city centre.

A college spokesperson said: “It has been fascinating for the students to discover what it was like to be a blind student in previous decades.

“They were amazed and horrified at some of the things the pupils got up to and fascinated by their insights into everything – from technology to school food,” they added.

A CD has been created of some of the highlights and the result is a wonderful snapshot of college life over the past 80 years as remembered by a handful of the hundreds of students who have attended.

The college also has a mobile listening station, which can be set up at schools, organisations or workplaces. Copies of the CD are available from the college.
