A FAMILY-run manufacturer and installer of automated gates, security fencing and ornamental railings and fencing is among those backing the Waddle of Worcester next summer by sponsoring two penguins.

Gates Railings and Fencing Limited is joining the great Waddle of Worcester by sponsoring an adult and baby penguin. Two of eighty sculptures which will brighten city streets and public spaces, the large penguins will later be sold at auction to raise funds for St Richard’s Hospice.

The company’s penguin chick will be designed and decorated by children from a county primary school.

Lawson Pope, managing director of Gates Railings and Fencing Limited, said:

“We loved the elephant trail in 2021 and were lucky to secure a sculpture at auction which not only helped the hospice but makes us smile every day.

“Becoming a penguin sponsor allows us to be involved in the next trail from the very beginning and to choose a design that will be brought to life out on the streets of Worcester.

“It also means we can help a local primary school play a part, creating lasting memories for everyone involved.”

The trail begins on Monday, July 22 and runs for eight weeks until Sunday, September 15.

Joining the company in sponsoring two penguins is Malvern Panalytical, a specialist instrument provider helping industries and researchers to understand the world with absolute precision.

Finance director Liz Oxborough, said:

“We all loved the Big Parade two years ago, so much so that one of the trail’s elephants now sits proudly in our reception area.

“Sponsoring our own penguin and supporting a local school to take part not only allows us to be part of a much-loved community event but to support the care that the hospice provides to patients and loved ones all over the county.

A global machine tool manufacturer, which has made Worcester home to its European manufacturing plant, has also signed-up to support the Waddle of Worcester.

And Yamazaki Mazak UK Ltd European Group Managing Director Richard Smith said the trail would create ‘many happy memories’ in the city.

“Worcester’s Big Parade brought the whole city together in 2018 so we’re excited to play our part again next summer and, in turn, support the care that St Richard’s Hospice provides locally,” he said.
