Masterclass strikes chord with students

YOUNG musicians from across the county were treated to a masterclass of music from the Carducci String Quartet at Worcester’s Huntingdon Hall.

The free one-hour masterclass was given to 13 Severn Arts pupils who are members of the Worcestershire Youth String Orchestra (WYSO) and the Worcestershire Youth Orchestra (WYO).

Internationally-renowned musicians Matthew Denton, Michelle Fleming, Eoin Schmidt-Martin and Emma Denton shared their wisdom and experience with the youngsters before taking to the stage with them for a one-off opportunity performance in front of a packed audience.

The students had been working on pieces beforehand and had then received coaching in the masterclass.

Student Hannah Whitten said: “The workshop was fantastic and then to listen to the Carducci Quartet play and actually perform in the same concert as the Carducci Quartet was truly inspirational.”

Ian Hattersley, Severn Arts deputy director of learning, said: “Receiving coaching from the Quartet and playing with them was such an invaluable experience and listening and watching them perform, with so much life and energy, will have undoubtedly inspired our young musicians.”

The Carducci String Quartet masterclass was organised by Worcester Concert Club in partnership with Severn Arts.

It was the first in a series of three combined masterclass and concerts planned across the next three years.
